Hill City became a town
in 1876, the second in the Black Hills. The lure of gold brought hardy
settlers and rough miners, loggers, and cowboys who were used to hard
work, a hard life, and hard play. First served by the Cheyenne-Deadwood
Stage, the discovery of tin, and the new tin mine, brought the Chicago,
Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1889, and Hill City boomed. The population
fluctuated as fortunes came and went, and, today, about 750 friendly
and devoted people live
in this mountain community. Centrally located, between the northern
and southern Hills, Hill City is known as the "Heart of the Hills".
Several original structures still stand, and the authentic 1880 train
with a ride between Keystone and Hill City delights visitors. The
Museum of Natural History and many shops, as well as Hill City's close
proximity to major landmarks and attractions, make it a favorite stop
in the Black Hills. Not to be overlooked, is it's authentic western
flavor; no accident with many of the residents being descendents of
the early settlers.
There is an abundance of
dining and lodging. For more information contact the Hill City Charmbe
of Commerce @ 605-574-4946.
